Abstract

Reflecting on the development of community music practice and theory this chapter describes its distinctive character and offers an argument for why the concept might be important for those engaged with music education. By situating community music as a conceptual boundary-walker I suggest that its importance might be an ability to cast a critical light upon logocentric manifestations of music teaching and learning. With a tenacious insistence for creativity, collaboration, and community, I argue that its theory and practice is most powerful and productive from a wide angled vantage point. As a haunting presence that weaves playfully in and out different music teaching and learning approaches community music, as a marginal practice, can become, and importantly remain, a rich concept through which disruptive dialogue can take place.
