Abstract:

'Building Sounds' was organised by Allen Tod Architects, Sue Ball (MAAP) and Robert Wilsmore. The 4x4 talks were funded by Allen Tod Architects and the artistic events by The Arts Council and Leeds College of Music. The event opened Architecture week 06 in Yorkshire and generated a number of artistic events centred on Architecture. These included commissions for composition and performance: the composers’ orchestra using the new building architectural plans as musical structure to a commissioned video; trumpeter Didrik lngvaldsen on the roof of the building, improvising with the city soundscape; sound poet Bruce Barnes; Matthew Bourne and Peter Fadnes - Metropolis ensemble - improvised jazz to commissioned video; improvisation from LIMA musicians (Leeds Improvisation Association) in, on and around the building; performances from composer, pianist Graham Coatman; commission from composer, saxophonist Gemma Wild; and sound installations from Dale Perkins and Robert Wilsmore. The event explored sound and place, sound and building, all nature of sound in relation to architecture. For example, the improvisation from Didrik Ingvalsden up on top of the building could be heard harmonising and improvising with the bells of St Peter’s church right into the city centre. Wilsmore’s works, antiphonal constructions, placed two speakers at the top and bottom of a stairwell between the main building and the 4x4 talk auditorium, turning a liminal space into a performance venue. This was a festival of exploration of sound and architecture that was free to the public who were able to move freely in and out of the building and navigate their own way through a musical journey as they would navigate freely from room to room in a building. It explored structure in traditional music (Bartok, Bach), sound poetry, electro-acoustic and sonic art, improvisation and site specific music, and the unity of orchestral composition and architectural structure.
