Abstract

Re-establishing Conch Shell Industry in Bangladesh
The Shankha shell is the basis of the conch shell industry in Bangladesh. The most popular product is artistic handmade jewellery among many other uses. It was established in Bangladesh in the 12th century and started exporting to England and Denmark by the 17th century. At present, the industry is under threat to existence. The study explores the present status, challenges behind the growth and a strategic framework to reconstruct this creative industry. The search shows a few clusters of businesses are saturated all around the country and surviving on a family basis instead of as an industry. The main issue of the industry among many others is the loss in the market for the domestic product as an effect of allowing Indian conch shell products in the market. The analysis of stakeholder interviews will help the study to form a framework to re-establish the conch shell industry in Bangladesh.
