Abstract

Health and safety are essential to successful field research, but abstract guidance can make for dull reading. In this chapter we illustrate health and safety thinking in practice with a series of ten fieldwork scenarios, each accompanied by a health and safety adviser’s perspective. Our examples encompass a mix of individual and group work in a range of environments, from undergraduate to postgraduate and postdoctoral research. We use them to consider two critical questions: ‘who am I working with?’ and ‘what are my responsibilities?’. We then end with some tips for risk assessment. The chapter thus offers insight into health and safety as a way of thinking, rather than a box to be ticked.
