Abstract

The autonomous features of wireless sensor network (WSN) and the rapid deployment of smart metering devices have revolutionized the smart grid infrastructures. These developments have driven the WSN-based smart metres for automatic recording, processing and evaluating energy information, and managing efficient energy usage. The smart metres are not limited to monitoring and processing energy information but also can be equipped to perform cooperative tasks between devices for detecting any selfish and malicious behaviour in the network. In this paper we have studied the topological factors that promote self-cooperation and detecting selfish behaviour in the WSN-based smart metering infrastructure. We have found that, when the structural similarity among the nodes is higher, the better for fostering trust behaviour among nodes. It is also more effective to detect the malicious nodes by using the trust and reputation management mechanisms. We have also revealed that the structural similarity between the nodes are correlated to the communicability distance and network efficiency which both facilitate more effective trust and reputation management in the smart metering infrastructure.
