Item Type: Show/Exhibition
Creators: Clare, Nattress and Daniel, Bryant
Abstract:

York Air Map evolved out of a collaboration between 16 citizen scientists, an atmospheric scientist and artist (myself). From August 2023 the website www.yorkairmap.org was made live and useable for public engagement. The website uses the data collected from 16 citizen scientists who attached an air pollution sensor to their bicycles over a month-long period in July 2023. The large amount of data that was collected has been added to the interactive map giving a street level overview of five different air pollutants. No other website exists which informs the public of street/ground level air pollution data in York or further afield, for that matter.

The project was created by artist Clare Nattress and Dr Daniel Bryant in collaboration together. The exhibition of work celebrated the website going live, as well as artist books, olfactory filters that the public could smell, photographs of the citizen scientists (taken by project photographer Mat Waudby), a recorded audio conversation, air pollution diaries and participants bicycles.
