Abstract

This chapter aims to initiate a comprehensive discussion on victimological concerns specifically related to human activities in outer space. It seeks to establish the groundwork by defining the concepts of ‘space victim’ and ‘space crime,’ thereby paving the way for safeguarding potential victims and, ideally, preventing victimisation altogether. The primary objective is to address the lacuna in victimological research by advocating for the recognition and examination of the unique challenges faced by individuals impacted by space-related offenses. By doing so, this chapter endeavours to ensure that the distinct needs, considerations, and possibly rights of space victims are acknowledged, thoroughly evaluated, and ideally, given precedence. Consequently, the subsequent sections will endeavour to delineate the parameters of a ‘space victimology,’ encompassing an exploration of potential issues, areas for investigation, and prospects for future scholarly inquiry. This endeavour aims to furnish forthcoming academic scholars in criminology and victimology with a framework for contemplation, theorisation, inquiry, and ultimately, the prevention and protection of prospective victims of space-related harm and criminal activities.
