This article investigates the charity networks that were organized for and by an estimated 16,000 British
prisoners of war sequestered in France during the Napoleonic conflicts. The study poses one question: how did the prisoners navigate varied forms of welfare and charity, in Britain and France, to secure means of subsistence? To explore this point, this article charts the transnational channeling of relief to captives in distress, with an eye for the nature of charity (monetary, material, associative), and the meanings of this assistance on both sides of the Channel.
