Abstract
This workshop is designed and facilitated by Dr N. Eda Erçin for Performer Training Working Group at TaPRA Annual Conference 2023.
The workshop offers a practical and critical exploration of physical intimacy in performer training beyond binary categories of identity. What is the role of binary identity categories (such as woman and man) in today’s psychophysical performer training context? Is the language of our dedicated practices sufficient or even ethical to communicate with a new generation of performer/students? Based on my ongoing training, teaching and research practice in post-Grotowskian, intercultural, feminist and ecological modes of contemporary performance, I offer this workshop to facilitate a dialogue about ways of finding, defining and sustaining ‘contact’ in diverse studio/classroom environments in higher education and beyond. The workshop will include exercises to practice and discuss our changing understandings of proximity and power in relation to physical difference, distance and resistance. As today’s practitioners/facilitators/directors, how do we notice and respond to the obstacles our students/performers/collaborators face when trying to find and keep ‘contact’ with each other in specifically non-verbal and psychophysical training and/or post-dramatic performance making processes? (How) Can we collaboratively construct a nonbinary language for training? What does consent look, feel and sound like, both when leading or participating in touch-based performer training?
