The Potential of Cocreative Research Through a Transactional Analysis Lens.
Transactional Analysis Journal, 56 (3).
pp. 254-268.
Abstract
Research is vital for the development, credibility, and evolution of transactional analysis (TA) as a psychotherapeutic modality. This paper argues that TA’s core principles—specifically cocreativity, “we-ness,” and contracting—position it uniquely to contribute to the expanding landscape of participatory and decolonized research. Drawing on the author’s history of social-justice-oriented research with marginalized communities, this article examines the power dynamics and positionality inherent in traditional investigative methodologies. It questions fundamental assumptions regarding who defines research “problems” and validates their solutions. By integrating an ethical understanding of we-ness with emancipatory research practices, the author explores how a research-informed TA culture can disrupt traditional hierarchies. Ultimately, this article highlights the ethical considerations of conducting research alongside marginalized groups and advocates for a cocreative approach for the future sustainability and integrity of the modality.
