Abstract
Practices around eating are socially constructed and compound class divisions through the configuration of spaces (Wills et al. 2011), as well as being part of
classed health discourses (Hubkins et al. 2000). We explore the entanglements of these discourses with Christian ministry and how class constructions generated through attitudes to food taste and habits and their relationship to the spatial create barriers in the institution of the Church of England (CofE).Our research (Fry and Jagger with Tyndall 2024) was commissioned by the Church to explore the impact of class barriers on clergy wellbeing. This chapter focuses on the constructions of class through the use of space and hospitality in the ministry lives of Church of England clergy who identify as working class.
