Abstract

This study was commissioned by the Church's Ministry Development Team and explores the experiences of clergy identifying as working-class in the Church of England to understand how their class experience impacts their wellbeing. We start from the position that wellbeing of working-class clergy is a matter of social justice and classism and other factors beyond the control of the individual affect wellbeing; wellbeing cannot be simply about self-care. Based on 50 semi-structured interviews and two focus groups, this report focuses on a number of recommendations for the institution of the Church of England to enable structural and cultural change aimed at eliminating classism and class-based differentiation of clergy.
