Dr. Tyson Mitman is a senior lecturer in sociology and criminology at York St. John University. He studies space, public aesthetics, and graffiti culture. Specifically, how individuals who produce graffiti and public art construct their identity within their subculture, how their interaction with public space produces a type of political discourse, and how it affect spaces and those who use those spaces. He is interested in how the appearance of a space affects the way a space is ideologically received or constructed, as well as how spaces appear affects the individual from a subjective and cultural perspective. Dr. Mitman's other research interests include subculture research, craft culture (specifically focused on craft beer producers) spatial aesthetics, deviance, and the politics of resistance.
