Dr Alexiou is a Senior Lecturer in Design Studies & Design History. She studied and practiced architecture, later focusing on gender and design history. She has held faculty roles at Manchester Metropolitan University and other UK institutions, teaching CCS at UG and PG level for various A&D courses. She holds an AHRC-funded doctoral in design, media and women’s history (Manchester Metropolitan University). Her research focuses on late nineteenth-century feminist periodicals, especially to the manner in which their textual, designed, visual and material aspects co-functioned in relation to gender politics, and other intersecting concepts such as class and ethnicity. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. She has presented original research at international conferences in the UK, US, Germany, Canada, Switzerland, Finland, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Belgium. She has published with Taylor and Francis Group and John Wiley & Sons Inc. Her most recent publication is entitled Women in Print I: Design and Identities (Alexiou and Roberto, 2022). Dr Alexiou welcomes MRes, MPhil and PhD applications within the arts and humanities, including design and media studies - especially in relation to gender, and other intersectional topics such as race, ethnicity, disability, and environmental topics such as sustainability.
