Andy's research focuses on the antecedents and consequences of participation in sport and exercise. His main areas of interest are the consequences of perfectionism (a personality trait) for athletes, exercisers, and youth sport participants. He has published in leading journals in sport and exercise psychology, health psychology, and general psychology on this topic. This work includes collaborations with colleagues at other UK universities (e.g. Dr Paul Appleton, University of Birmingham, Dr Paul Davis, Northumbria University, and Professor Joan Duda, University of Birmingham) and universities abroad (e.g., Dr Sanna Nordin-Bates, The Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, Sweden, and Dr John Gotwals, Lakehead University, Canada). His research has been funded by a number of organisations, including the Wellcome Trust, The Society for Education, Music and Psychology Research, The Higher Education Academy, and The Harold Hyam Wingate Foundation. He is a former associate editor of the International Journal of Sport Psychology and the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sport, and currently associate editor of Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology.
