Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the Profitability of Cassava Processing in Etche Local Government Area, Rivers State. The study population comprised of all cassava processors who have been in cassava processing enterprise for at least five years. Ninety-five (95) cassava processors were randomly sampled from nineteen (19) wards in Etche L.G.A. Structured questionnaires were administered to the respondents and descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data collected. The Gross Margin of processing cassava was determined. The findings of this study indicated that majority of the cassava processors in the study area (35.8%) were between ages of 41-50 years, 93.7% were women, 90.5% were married, 86.4% had formal education, 45.8% had family size of 4-6, 37.9% produce garri, 32.6% produce foo foo, 19% produce both garri and foo foo, 61.1% had more than 5 years experience and 83.2% use family labour. The major problems associated with processing cassava in the study area were low pricing (98.9%) and inadequate credits (97.9%). The Gross Margin of producing garri was N 48,360 and the Benefit Cost Ratio was 1.2 which meant that for every N 1 spent N 2 was gained. The Gross Margin of producing foo foo was N 151,320 and the Benefit Cost Ratio was 1.5 which meant that for every N I spent N 5 was gained. This showed that cassava processing to garri and foo foo in the study area was profitable. It is recommended that men should be encouraged to venture into cassava processing business.
