Abstract: | Light pollution has severe consequences for biodiversity and human health (Foott, 2022). Within protected dark-sky reserves National Parks have initiated leisure-based festivals and public engagement programmes to protect our dark-skies. Taking an ecological justice and regenerative tourism perspective, that recognises ecological crises are deeply intertwined with social challenges; this film explores the intersection between local stakeholder leisure engagement in dark sky festivals and the environmental impact. The research involved a novel filmmaking and film ethnography methodology, which was conducted during the North York Moors National Park Dark Skies Festival in February 2024. This case study highlights how stakeholder engagement in dark-sky festivals can produce sustainable ways to raise awareness of the climate crisis that help mitigate light pollution and contribute to positive environmental social and behavioural outcomes. |
