Abstract

Objective: To examine whether there are underlying neuropathological structural and functional similarities and differences in individuals with DCD, compared to individuals with DCD and one or more co-occurring conditions.
Methods: Using systematic review methodology, the following databases were comprehensively searched: CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsychINFO, AMED, and the Cochrane Library from 1987 to March 2024.
Inclusion criteria:
1. Individuals of any age
2. Individuals with DCD only
3. DCD with any other co-occurring conditions
4. Individuals in (2) and (3) must have met all DSM-4/DSM-5 criteria
5. Quantitative brain metrics (MRI, functional MRI (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), positron emission tomography, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), arterial spin labelling, magnetic resonance spectroscopy)
6. Study designs: cross-sectional, case-control, prospective cohort studies, quasi-experimental, longitudinal, RCTs (if baseline data reported).

Twenty-five studies met the inclusion criteria and were evaluated using a quality assessment tool by Kmet and associates(1).
