Abstract

This article argues for the African concept oí ubuntu as an alternative way of conceptualizing and understanding what it means to be Black and human within the context of Black theology in Britain. Crucially, identity formation according to this paradigm or world-view is constructed through relationship and as such is an ongoing process. It assesses how the Black experience is focused on within the field of Black British theology in order to show how ubuntu can contribute to this field and the way in which it could potentially be used to forge a renewed relationship with the "other" and in so doing re-cast what it means to be a person in a Black skin.
