Abstract

This article assesses the evidence for female involvement with the Order of the Garter in the Yorkist period, challenging the idea that women should be seen as forming a sister association, parallel to that of male companions. Scholarship has focused primarily on gifts of Garter livery to understand the role of women, eliciting a narrow view of their engagement with the Order. Revisiting the source material and widening the range of evidence assessed suggests that female association with the Order served to magnify the impact of this exclusive institution, and that this was an honour important to the women themselves.
