Sustainable Innovation in Africa: Prospects, Challenges and Trends.
New York, Routledge, pp. 1-15
Abstract
This first chapter of the book introduces the intersectionality of sustainable innovation models and dimensions of sustainability-driven performance indicators across African countries and sectors of the economy. The African countries are striving to be the global powerhouse of eco-based innovative solutions linked to effective nurturing of green entrepreneurs. In this context, green entrepreneurs across the continent are playing a central role in smart agriculture, health provision, renewable energy technology, climate change resilience technology, education, food security, employment creation, and waste management. The nongovernmental organizations, climate experts, development practitioners, business professionals, policymakers, entrepreneurs, responsible investors, and researchers are coming together to creating sustainable innovation pathways that speak to the African-based sustainability problems guided by the Africa Agenda 2063. Building on this kind of collaboration, this first chapter of the book presents how groundbreaking sustainable-oriented innovation models address the sustainability challenges in Africa with a particular attention to challenges, prospects, and trends emerging from the socio-economic context of the African continent. The sustainable-oriented policy convergence and divergence discourse linked to conceptualization and implementation of sustainability-driven problems demands the execution of incubators dedicated to groundbreaking, long-lasting innovations from entrepreneurs. This chapter concludes with the interrogation of policy frameworks for stimulating sustainable innovation solutions in Africa.
