Abstract

Within the community music literature, concepts associated with the work of the psychotherapist Carl Rogers have occasionally been discussed and implied in the context of group work and facilitation. The purpose of this article is to expand on what has been, to date, a passing glance and explore in more detail the theoretical framework of what is known as the person-centred approach and how this body of theory might apply to community music. We posit that closer consideration of the Rogerian framework alongside its developments and critiques would offer community musicians access to a conceptual language that can open spaces for a richer understanding of the practices and processes, both in making music with people and in research.
