Abstract

'Queer' is the subject of a markedly successful linguistic “reclamation project” (Herbert, 2015: 1), now possessing a variety of non-derogatory uses. However, linguistic research observes divided support for reclamation efforts within the communities most affected by particular slurs (Brontsema, 2004), and has argued reclamation projects cannot be treated as won-and-done processes (Herbert, 2015). Recent data (Edmondson, 2021) also supports a view that responses to LGBTQ+ slurs differ by and within demographic groups. This chapter argues that queer theory itself has struggled to acknowledge these tensions in its own use of the word. Accordingly, how can queer pedagogies balance the many legitimate reasons to invoke a reclaimed slur in the classroom, against the very real potential for it to still cause harm? Drawing on the literature and the author’s own teaching practice, this chapter argues for a critical, reflexive and transparent approach.
