Abstract

Funded by Women and the Church (WATCH) this project aimed to provide detailed information about the lack of transparency in the gendered positions taken by some local church leaders within the Church of England. The Church provides a mechanism by which parishes can refuse for theological reasons the ordained ministry of women and request oversight of bishops who do not ordain women. In other churches, there is a less visible culture of complementarianism, which defines roles according to gender. WATCH has raised the issue of lack of transparency of gendered positions, whereby women may worship in a church without knowledge or understanding of gendered positions. By surveying websites, and through a questionnaire and 15 semi-structured interviews, we argue in this report that the lack of transparency impedes women's flourishing and causes significant damage to relationships and faith journeys.
