In 2004, I came back to the UK from fifteen years in South East Asia and joined York St John University, first as co-ordinator of the International Foundation Programme, then as Head of Programme for the MA Applied Linguistics: TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and now as Head of the School of Education, Language and Psychology. My Doctorate in Education is from the Institute of Education, University College London, where I researched aspects of internationalising UK universities and the use of English as a lingua franca by 'home' and 'international' students. My most recent research looks at the question of ontologies of English and the impact of these on English language teacher education, and on interviews as a research method in applied linguistics to explore the co-production of ontologies of migration and identity.
