I am a Senior Lecturer in Management and Organisational Development within York Business School. I completed my DBA at the University of Huddersfield in 2021 with a thesis titled 'Academics and the Psychological Contract: The formation and manifestation of the Psychological Contract within the academic role'. I have over twenty-five years researching, teaching, and managing within the Higher Education and Further Education Sectors, previously working in Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool Hope University, Edge Hill University, and the University of Chester. I am Co-Chair of the People in Employment Settings Research Group and a member of the Higher Education Research Group. My area of research interest focuses on people's behaviour. I am very keen to investigate (and to help others to understand) why people behave as they do in their workplace setting. A key area of this is appreciated through the lens of the psychological contract. At present, I am focusing on applying ideas to educational settings and investigating academic staff's behaviour as semi-autonomous professionals. Other areas of interest include student motivation and approaches to learning, pedagogical approaches, scholarship development, and organisational change and development. Externally I am an Associate Editor for four established international journals (Journal of Further and Higher Education; International Journal og HRD: Practice, Policy and Research; International Journal Journal of Organization Theory and Behavior; Cogent Business and Management (HRM Section)). I also undertake review activities for a range of Journals and am an Editorial Board / Advisory Board Member for Leadership and Organization Development Journal; Perspectives: Policy and Practice in Higher Education; Human Resource Management and Services; American Journal of Management Science and Engineering. I am a member of the Research Development Committee for the University Forum for Human Resource Development (UFHRD) and Co-convenor of the Post 16 Education Leadership and Management Research Interest Group within the British Educational Leadership, Management and Administration Society (BELMAS).
