Dr Al O'Doherty is a Health Services Research Fellow in the Institute for Health and Care Improvement, while also holding a research role within the Public Health team at City of York Council. His research focuses on generating and applying evidence to improve health services, public health and patient outcomes through the development, evaluation and translation of research into practice. Al has a background in clinical exercise physiology and health services research, with expertise in cardiovascular disease, peripheral arterial disease, (p)rehabilitation, falls prevention and digital health. He has secured more than £2.6 million in competitive research funding and has led or contributed to research across NHS, university and local authority settings. His publications include clinical trials, systematic reviews, evidence syntheses and service evaluations investigating rehabilitation, digital health and the prevention and management of long-term conditions. His current research spans the evaluation of rehabilitation and digital health interventions, alongside work to strengthen research partnerships between universities, healthcare organisations and local government. Through these activities, he supports the generation and use of evidence to inform policy, practice and service improvement, with the overarching aim of improving health outcomes and reducing health inequalities.
