Senior Lecturer in the Sociology of Sport

Biography:

Mark’s research draws upon figurational sociology as a theoretical framework. His previous research has focused on females in martial arts, with particular emphasis on female Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) athletes in relation to notions of gendered embodiment and physical empowerment. Mark's PhD focuses on male Physical Education (MPE). Theoretically, this involves examining social processes involved in the gendered civilizing of young males' bodies and the extent to which MPE offers young males a gendered quest for exciting significance. I am particularly interested in tension balances between these two concepts and how they play out in young males' masculine identities, behaviour and relations in MPE.

Qualifications:

Mark graduated from York St John University with a first class degree in (Ba) Sport Studies and completed an MSc in the Sociology of Sport at Loughborough University. In 2010, Mark re-joined York St John University as a lecturer and completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PCAP). Mark is currently completing a PhD.
