Abstract

This research project was funded by the Church Universities Fund and York St John University; it explores the experiences of trans and non-binary staff and students at Anglican Foundation universities, and the support role of university chaplaincies. Against the backdrop of media coverage of proposals to reform the Gender Recognition Act and criticism of the Church of England regarding its position on gender identity and sexuality, our priority was to hear the voices of trans and non-binary folk and to make practical recommendations for chaplains and others working in education. The report has been commended by participants: ‘I feel well listened to, understood, and insightfully interpreted back to myself’ – Revd Dr Christina Beardsley; ‘ground-breaking … thought-provoking … refreshingly inclusive … should be required reading for anyone who teaches or works with trans and non-binary individuals’ - Dr Michael Bonshor.
