Abstract: | This performance has been developed from working with research into International Dark Sky Reserves to understand how areas without excessive light pollution give a better view of the night sky. The work's research process was through a series of night walks in Dark Sky Reserves in the North York Moors National Park as part of the Dark Skies Festival. The subject matter of the performance asks the question "Who are we without our night skies", and addresses the question to understand our relationship to cosmic time, and our place within the universe in relation to a surrealist film by Maya Derek entitled The Very Eye of Night, that imagines dancers in space, in and among the stars. It also addresses the problem of satellite technology with its potential to block out clear views of the night sky and weaves narrative threads to challenge the problems that excessive light pollution where light on earth from mobile phone technology to satellite TV is contributing to such pollution. The work's fundamental story reflects upon what it is like, to walk at night, in the dark in rural areas and connect to the night sky - where the eyes adjust and the body attunes. |
