Abstract
In this chapter, it is my intent to provide a 60-year critical retrospective on my academic and professional life. Underlying the most recent 20-year period, I have been troubled by the oft-cited phrases: the art of leadership, or the art of management, or the art of some other such work practice or other. Taking things quite literally, no one could ever explain to me what they meant when they uttered those words. And no book that purported to offer the secrets of any art, could satisfy my curiosity. Why so literal? What did it matter? Well, to me, it matters a lot.
