Hind, Claire (2025) HOLD. [Show/Exhibition]

Item Type: Show/Exhibition
Creators: Hind, Claire
Abstract:

Claire is a performer who walks to seek out extraordinary shapes in the natural landscape to rest and wrap body around geological rock, moulding into a boulder’s shape to practice deep listening (Oliveros). The work began during the pandemic where we could no longer perform or encourage gatherings, as a provocation on bodies, fragility, the place of women in the natural environment. Claire performed for an incidental, limited audience, most often alone and invited her daughter, to take photos of this practice in sites where there is visible evidence of Earth’s geological history. Claire continues this practice and appreciates Earth as a complex matrix of vibrating energy by getting to know, through touch the rock type, textured features, forms of erosion and with an appreciation of the more than human.

Claire composes poetic texts from out of this practice; words are formed from the meeting point between her scientific interest in the boulders, the rock type she holds, the mediative practice that attempts to comprehend our lifeline within what seems incomprehensible; deep time, and what it means to hold onto, or let go of, the pressures of time. Our world is a complex matrix of vibrating energy, matter and air, just as we are made of vibrations. Vibration connects us to all things interdependently. (Oliveros)
