Abstract

This chapter highlights the importance of putting theory into practice through a Bourdieusian analysis of girls' discussions about their hopes for the future. One of Bourdieu’s main emphases on his theoretical framework was
that it was not simply reified, but that researchers should demonstrate the relevance of his concepts through empirical inquiry. This exploration of constructions of ‘achievement’ within secondary education and the choices girls make about the educational pathways they pursue does this. Drawing on another of Bourdieu’s central positions – that of researchers’ reflexivity, the author reflects on her own politics and feminism as influencing the
decision she made to study gender and education by looking specifically at girls’ educational choices.
