Abstract:

Letting Off Steam is a devised show by feminist folk duo Union Jill and performance Poet Kate Fox for an Edinburgh Fringe show (2015) and Rural touring (2017). It is marketed as "Entertaining rhythms, rhyming and ranting from three of the North's top female wordsmiths. Union Jill's soaring songs and Kate Fox's sharp satire are knitted together with a big warm helping of down-to-earth Yorkshire daftness. Letting off Steam is having a rant about the things that are wrong and celebrating the things that make life better. Beautiful music, uplifting comedy and surprising stories, come and join us ... we've got the kettle on."

The show demonstrates an outworking of our conversations about shared frustrations as women but also our endeavour to make an entertaining show. In our collaboration we experience Isabelle Stengers idea that it is loyalty and trust in “creative uncertainty” that is required to pass back and forth ideas that become entanglements. This was how we formed the show from our existing practices. With full attention and commitment to the process we attached and detached to each other’s offerings and formed a new composite whole.
