Abstract

Theatre And Neurodiversity explores the many intersections between theatre and the Neurodiversity Movement. Seeking to de-pathologise neurodivergence and deconstruct neuronormativity, neurodiversity reminds us that the most interesting, creative, and powerful things occur when we embrace different ways of thinking and understanding. Theatre And Neurodiversity considers how and where neurodiverse aesthetics appear, and how theatre is contributing to the emergence of neurodivergent culture. Through analysis of key creative examples from the fields of theatre, performance, and activism, the practices of neurodivergent theatre artists are brought into the spotlight as the foundation of a neurodiverse approach to theatre making. The volume also challenges theatre’s reliance on neuronormative models of practice and explores ways that practitioners and companies have sought to break down barriers to neuroaccessibility.

Finally, the book considers the ways in which theatre and performance might respond to some of the questions and challenges faced by the Neurodiversity Movement itself. Ultimately, this volume seeks to bring conversations about neurodiversity to the centre of our thinking about theatre and performance, equipping students, teachers, practitioners and scholars with accessible information about the intersections between the Neurodiversity Movement and theatre, and challenging us to embed neurodiverse thinking at the heart of our learning, teaching, practice and scholarship.
