Abstract

Perfectionism – the desire to be perfect - is an increasingly common characteristic among young people. In achievement contexts such as sport and education, it might seem like that this trait is something that is desirable or useful. However, research suggests that there are many downsides (or “perils”) of perfectionism that include motivation, performance, and wellbeing difficulties. The keynote will introduce perfectionism, its perils, and offer practical steps and resources available to better safeguard young people from the negative effects of believing you, others, or life, need to be perfect.
