Abstract
This paper was presented as part of the BERA 2016 symposium: Education, social theory and social justice: the challenge of theorising alternatives futures.
In this paper by way of context, I argue that Dewey's definition of the “best and wisest parent” is being increasingly instrumentalised. As a counter to this instrumentalisation I argue for the need for a more relational school, drawing upon John Macmurray's work. However, I explore my concerns regarding emphasis on common values and harmonious relationships and bring Jacques Rancière's work together with Macmurray's to emphasise the need for dissensus within a relational democracy.
