Healthcare employees represent the visible and invisible hands in the delivery of superior and holistic healthcare to patients and are a source of competitive advantage for healthcare organisations. Despite this, managing healthcare employees is the biggest challenge for African healthcare organisations and this calls for a strategic approach to the recruitment, selection and retention of healthcare employees. By managing healthcare employees strategically, healthcare organisations can build customer-driven organisations by leveraging employees’ privileged position as a patient’s first port of call; a source of patient information; and a core part of the healthcare product and brand. Successful healthcare organisations are the ones that get the best out of their employees though the application of human resource management practices.
