Abstract
This introduction to Literary Geography in Later COVID reflects on the evolution of literary geography in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. It traces the origins of the collection to two prior publications in Literary Geographies: Sheila Hones’s 2020 article, The Cube of Loneliness, and the special issue Literary Geographies in Isolation. The introduction explores how the pandemic transformed literary geography, highlighting both the generative and limiting effects of confinement on scholarly practices such as fieldwork, walking methods, and reading. It also examines the personal and professional challenges faced by literary geographers, emphasizing the relational nature of the field and its focus on the interplay between texts, spaces and human experiences. While acknowledging the distress and trauma caused by the pandemic, the introduction reflects on the field’s ability to adapt and find value in the constraints imposed by the crisis. Ultimately, it sets the stage for the essays in the collection, which grapple with the pandemic’s lasting impact on literary geography and explore how the field can move forward in a post-pandemic world.
