Continuities in Psychological Adjustment of Students with Special Needs.
In: BPS Education Section Conference, 12 - 14 November 2010, Milton Keynes.
Abstract
Debates about the benefits of inclusive education for students with disability or Special Educational Needs (SEN) have focused on the educational and social benefits of inclusive mainstream settings for both children with- and those without SEN in primary and secondary schools. There has, however, been little discussion of the psychological adjustment or mental health of individuals with SEN in these settings and how such adjustment may progress and impact on the individual across the lifespan. This paper discusses the psychological adjustment of children with SEN depending on type and severity of disability. It has generally been recognised that the quality of children’s social relations is a good indicator of their behavioural and emotional adjustment, which have implications for their academic achievement. The paper initially reviews and presents findings from studies on social experiences of children with SEN from early educational contexts in infancy through primary to secondary schools, and how these are related to their social and emotional adjustment. As those with SEN get into higher education they are faced with new challenges with implications for psychological adjustment. Another focus of the paper is therefore on the experiences of students with SEN post secondary school. The social psychological implications of having a learning disability for such students are discussed together with the range and efficacy of efforts aimed at meeting their needs in further and higher education. The paper concludes with an overview of the pattern of provision and the efficacy and implications, for the affected individuals, of continuities in various efforts aimed at meeting the needs of individuals with SEN at different levels of their education.
