Abstract
This chapter engages with the notion of playfulness in relation to theatre audience research - and indeed, research methodologies more generally. It proposed playfulness as at once an attitude – a style or relational approach – that shapes how we do things and the methods or tools that we adopt; and also a ethos that informs our understanding of why we are doing things and the kinds of meanings, feelings and knowledge that we want to produce. The chapter discusses the exchange between playful research & serious play; the qualities of playful enquiry; and play as inspiring benefitial relational interactions.
