Abstract

Compassionate pedagogy has gained international traction in recent educational discourse, advocating for empathy, understanding and flexibility in teaching practices and settings, particularly regarding neurodiverse students in higher education (HE) (Hamilton & Petty, 2023). Recent commentary draws attention to its association with mental vulnerability of students and ‘a political emphasis on diversity’ linked to the marketisation of HE (Williams, 2023). Despite several higher education institutions (HEIs) adopting compassionate pedagogy to support social justice, (see for example Canterbury Christ Church University, University of Manitoba, University of Hertfordshire), we should be mindful that lack of empirical evidence undermines its credibility.
