Abstract
This keynote argues that while compassion and support services are important, they are insufficient to achieve genuine inclusion in higher education. Drawing on insights from SEND theory, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and critical pedagogy, the session challenges deficit-oriented and reactive approaches that rely on individual adjustments after students encounter difficulties. Instead, it proposes a shift towards adaptive, anticipatory, and critically informed pedagogies that identify and remove barriers before failure occurs. By exploring the movement from medical to social and critical models of inclusion, the keynote reframes inclusion as an intellectual and pedagogical responsibility rather than a matter of compliance or care alone. Practical examples from teaching, assessment, and curriculum design demonstrate how educators can maintain high expectations while creating more accessible and equitable learning environments. The session concludes by asking a fundamental question: who is expected to adapt—the student or the institution?
