Abstract

In this case study I aim to set out approaches to supporting students in their research journey through the use of university-based points of monitoring and review and supervisor/supervisee negotiated deadlines. I will be primarily discussing the nature of practice-based research in the Arts and Humanities, but the principles which I set out apply to other forms of research student supervision. The main exemplars I use are creative practice via creative writing. In my home institution the criteria for creative practice PhDs includes a negotiated creative ‘artefact’ (for example a novel or script) and an associated exegesis of up to 50 000 words. Importantly the critical section has to include reflection on process – practice as research - in addition to other forms of critical and contextual engagement.
